ADDICTION INTO FICTION - A FREE OF CHARGE, SOBER WRITING CLASS
Traditionally, addiction has been explored from the addict’s point of view and adheres firmly to the facts. Countless books have been published on this subject, in confessional style. In this workshop we will try to turn that beat around. The stories we will write will use the addict’s real life experience as a jumping off point to create a work of art. The addict/writer* will be encouraged to create a short work of fiction that sees the events through the eye of someone else, someone close, ie., a member of his family, or a spouse, or an employer, or a fictonal character. I have been clean and sober for more than twenty years and see this as an opportunity not just for creativity but also for catharsis. The writer will choose the material and through these classes will learn to apply the basics of good writing to his or her work.
*addict = recovering alcoholics as well as drug addicts, food addicts, love addicts etc.
WORKSHOP LEADER EDUARDO SANTIAGO IS THE AWARD-WINNING AUTHOR OF THE NOVEL “TOMORROW THEY WILL KISS.” HIS WORK HAS ALSO APPEARED IN THE LOS ANGELES TIMES, THE ADVOCATE, ZYZZYVA, THE CARIBBEAN WRITER.
I expect the classes to be focused, exciting, respectful and fun. I have taught creative writing not only at UCLA Extension and a myriad of schools in and around Los Angeles, but also in MAXIMUM SECURITY PRISONS! So I’m prepared for anything. Be shocking, be fabulous. Eduardo.
